Somerset Closed Squash Tournament |
There was considerable
success for players from local clubs in the Somerset County Closed
Squash tournament held at East Bridgwater Sports Centre on the 7th
/8th May. Players from the area made up 6 of the 8 finalists and
included representatives from Cheddar Valley Squash Club, King
Alfred Squash Club (Highbridge) and Sydenham Squash Club
(Bridgwater).
In the Grade D final, James Rusk from Cannington completed a
straight games victory over Richard Ford (Glastonbury) while
Sydenham Squash juniors Levi Searle and Toby Gaylor, who were
playing in their first senior tournament, took 3rd and 4th places.
The Grade C event was won by Sedgemoor’s Sports Development
Officer Alwyn Malan (Cheddar Valley Squash) with a 3-0 win over
Sydenham’s Lee O’Donnell.
Paul Hancock and Stuart McKechnie, also both from Sydenham were 3rd
& 4th.
The B grade final was another all Sedgemoor affair between
talented Somerset County U17 team mates Rob MacKinlay (King Alfred)
and Sam Weston (Sydenham). A match filled with long rallies was
eventually won by Rob 3-0. Steve Tribe, Sydenham, beat Oliver
Williams (Wellington) for 3rd place.
In the A grade 3rd/4th playoff King Alfred’s Pete Cossey
lost to Derek Truman (Taunton) by 3-0.
The A grade flagship event featured a very close, high
quality final between Tom Parsons from Sydenham and England ranked
number 19 Darren Healey from Frome, watched by a large appreciative
crowd. Darren took the first game 9-6 before Tom struck back to take
the next two 5-9, 6-9. Darran leveled the match with a 9-1 game and
proving the stronger player took the final game and the match to win
3-2.
The trophies were presented by Somerset Squash League Secretary Dick
French
Somerset Squash would like to thank East Bridgwater Sports Centre
for providing the venue and all competitors, markers and volunteers
who made this year's event a great success |
